Hulu’s Candy tells the true story of Betty Gore’s murder but the story doesn’t end there. Here are details on where Betty’s husband, Allan, is now.

Summary

  • Hulu's Candy miniseries accurately portrays the true story of Betty Gore's murder and the events leading up to it.
  • Allan Gore, Betty's husband and Candy's lover, stood by Candy during her trial, asserting that their affair had been mutual.
  • After Candy's acquittal, Allan remarried and moved away, losing custody of his and Betty's daughters who were later adopted by Betty's parents.

Hulu’s Candy follows the gruesome true story of the murder of Betty Gore, but little is said about what happened to Betty Gore’s husband, Allan Gore, after Candy Montgomery’s trial. Starring Jessica Biel in the title role, Candy is largely told from her point of view and based partially on her testimony in regard to the killing of Betty Gore. The five-episode event follows her life before, during, and after the murder, including her relationship with Allan Gore which is very much at the center of the true-crime tale.

Pablo Schreiber plays Allan Gore in the great Hulu miniseries, the man who Candy was having an affair with before she killed his wife, Betty. The true story behind the case of Betty Gore's axe murder and Candy Montgomery subsequently getting off on self-defense is still debated today, even over 40 years later. While Hulu did its best to cover the subject in calculating detail, there were a few things that were bound to differ from the real incident. Nonetheless, the miniseries is surprisingly accurate in its portrayal of the murder and the events leading up to it, including Allan Gore's part in the story.

What Happened Between Allan Gore And Candy Montgomery

Was Allan And Dandy's Affair The Reason Betty Died?

Candy spends much of its first episodes jumping back and forth through time between just after the murder and everything that led up to it. The series shows Candy strikes up a friendship with Betty, but there is some question about the authenticity of the friendship as Candy is popular, fun, and largely ill-matched for the awkward and strict Betty. Furthering the idea that there was an ulterior motive behind the friendship, Candy was having an affair with Betty’s husband, Allan Gore, and the friendship might have been an attempt to assuage her guilt.

The affair lasted several months and, though it was Allan Gore who ended the affair, Candy later claimed the conclusion of the relationship was mutual. Allan Gore wanted to reinvest in his marriage to Betty (played by Melanie Lynskey) and Candy was dissatisfied with the sex. It was roughly a year later, on Friday the 13th of June 1980, when Candy stopped by Betty and Allan’s house to pick up Betty’s daughter’s swimsuit for a sleepover and murdered Betty Gore.

The story of the small-town suburban mother killing her church friend with an ax quickly captured the attention of the nation and Candy, her husband Pat, and Allan Gore were thrust into the spotlight. Four years later, Candy stood trial and was acquitted on self-defense. Candy claimed that Betty asked her about the affair and she told the truth. She then alleged that Betty threatened her with an ax, and a scuffle broke out over its possession, resulting in Candy getting control and striking Betty 41 times. Shortly thereafter, Allan Gore remarried and moved away from Wylie, Texas.

The Real Allan Gore Stood By Candy Montgomery

Allan Gore largely stood by Candy during the trial, adamantly claiming that the end of their affair had been mutual which worked to discredit the idea that Candy’s murder of Betty Gore was an act of passion and further her plea of self-defense. Less than three months after the trial, Allan married Elaine Clift and the couple relocated to Sachse, Texas. It was also around this time that Allan Gore lost custody of his and Betty’s daughters, Alisa and Bethany. Four years after the trial, in 1988, the girls were then adopted and raised by Betty’s parents, Bertha and Bob Pomeroy.

Speaking about the four years prior to their adoption, Alisa (Lisa) and Bethany have said that Allan Gore and Elaine would frequently punish them by withholding food and making them take cold showers (via transcription of an article from Dallas Morning News). Lisa claims her stepmother made her read Evidence of Love (which details Allan Gore’s affair and Betty’s murder) when she was ten years old. Bob Pomeroy also recounted an occasion when Bethany returned from a visit with Allan and Elaine with tufts of hair pulled from her scalp.

Allan Gore has since divorced Elaine (played by Jamie Anne Allman) and now lives in Sarasota, Florida. According to his Facebook page, he entered into a domestic partnership in 2016 and is now retired. Though Alisa and Bethany claimed to be estranged from their father in 2000, the current status of their relationship and communication is unknown.

Candy Isn't The Only 2020s TV Show To Adapt Allan Gore

HBO's Love & Death Had Jesse Plemons Play Allan Gore

A true-crime story is rarely depicted twice on the screen within the span of a year, but that's what happened when Hulu decided to release Candy and HBO came out with their own miniseries, Love & Death, just shy of a year after its predecessor. While Pablo Schreiber took on the role of Allan Gore in Candy, Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons depicted Gore in the HBO series. There are a lot of differences between the two shows, despite telling the same story, and even Plemons and Schreiber's portrayal of Allan Gore sport some key differences.

For one, Allan Gore is a lot more charismatic in Love & Death. Candy chooses to see Allan as more of a stereotypical techie, who is approached by a much stronger and more vivacious woman. Love & Death sees a more friendly and personable Allan Gore. However, it's been said that Schreiber's rendition may be more accurate. The HBO series also features a much more passionate love affair between Gore and Montgomery, whereas Candy is much more transactional. In this case, Love & Death has a more accurate portrayal of the affair itself between Candy and Allan Gore and seems to be closer to the true story, events-wise.
