The 52-foot Slovakian-flagged sailboat Altego II remains beached along Lahaina’s Front Street Thursday morning. According to releases from the United States Coast Guard, the boat ran aground on Jan. 8 with eight people aboard. The release said Good Samaritan vessels operating in the area were able to safely transport those on board, including five children. No injuries were reported. The family was reportedly trying to seek safe harbor during a storm when the boat’s hull was ruptured and it began leaking fuel. The vessel owner removed approximately 75 gallons of fuel before turning over pollution removal actions to the Coast Guard. The Hawaii Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation is in contact with the owner regarding salvage plans. It is likely to be cut into pieces and removed via Front Street.
